Julia was puzzled by the austere Professor van der Wagema's remark that there should be more to life than working at St. Anne's Hospital in London. "At the end of the day you know what that is," he'd said. "To love and be loved. Simply that."

Was he hinting that he was going to marry again? And why bother to tell her, anyway?

Why should he suppose that she was interested in his private life?
