Love At Second Sight

In this novel, we really see Edith's strength. She is not the sort of woman to behave rashly - far from it - but once she realises that she can be happy only away from Bruce, and with Aylmer, she will not be drawn off-course. It helps, too, that Aylmer is much more loving and considerate towards her children than Bruce is. For Bruce, children are merely a noisy annoyance. If Edith had gone off with Aylmer in 'Tenterhooks', the story would have much less resonance.
